Smolensk State Medical Academy

Smolensk State Medical University was founded in 1920.

Smolensk State Medical University is a government medical college recognized by WHO and all countries of the world including USA, UK and India.

In the international rating of Smolensk State Medical University is placed on the 22nd position.

Today Chancellor of Smolensk State Medical University is Professor Dr. R.S. Kozlov.

Professor Roman Kozlov is a Fellow of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the Federation of European Societies for Chemotherapy (FESCI). Professor Kozlov received both his PhD and DSc in Clinical Pharmacology and Microbiology at the Smolensk State Medical Academy in Smolensk, Russia. In 1996 he was awarded an MSc in Clinical Microbiology from the University of London and has been the recipient of several awards, including an ESCMID Award for Advances in Clinical Microbiology in 2005, Institute Merieux grant in 2011 and APUA Leadership Award in 2012. In 1995 and 2009, he was awarded grants from the President of the Russian Federation. Since 2015, he serves as a Chief Specialist of Ministry of Health of Russian Federation on Clinical Microbiology & Antimicrobial resistance. In 2016 he was elected to  Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) as a Corresponding Member.

Professor Kozlov has focused his clinical research on therapeutic agents for infectious diseases and has been involved in numerous clinical trials of antimicrobial agents. His main research interests are in the diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of serious microbial infections, both in the community and in hospitals, and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and surveillance. Professor Kozlov has authored or co-authored more than 350 publications.

Students from more then 50 countries study here: from India, Germany, Italy, Poland, Sri Lanka and other countries of African, Asian and South American continents.

For foreign students education is carried out in English medium.

The number of seats in faculty of Medicine per year is 1000, out of which 323 seats are reserved for foreign students.

There are 65 departments, where 450 highly qualified teachers are working.

All the above faculties and departments are well equipped with Electronic Microscopes, Bio-Chemical Laboratories, Radio-Isotope Laboratories and lecture halls equipped with Tele-video and multimedia apparatuses.

There are 31 hospitals working under the Smolensk State Medical University out of them 8 hospitals with about 6000 beds are used for education of students.

Today this University is a big scientific establishment where fundamental, applied and methodical scientific researches are carried out.

 

Medical Faculty

The Medical Faculty is the biggest structural and functional sub-division of the Smolensk State Medical University. The Medical Faculty has 20 big hospitals under it. Modern diagnostics and treatment facilities are available here. Foreign scientists and professors from countries like USA, UK, Germany, Canada and others are invited to read lectures at the Smolensk State Medical University. Medical Degree awarded by this faculty is recognised in all countries including India (Recognised by Medical Council of India).

Dental Faculty

The Dental Faculty of the Smolensk State Medical University has become one of the leading faculties in Russia for a period of about 50 years of its existence. It has all facilities to produce highly qualified dentists. Dental Degree awarded by this faculty is recognised in all countries including India (Recognised by Dental Council of India).

Faculty for Foreign Students

This faculty is for giving education to foreign students. At present about 950 foreign students are studying. Out of these 850 students are from India and all of them are studying in English Medium. Out of these 850 Indian students about 300 are girls. Degrees awarded by this faculty is recognised in all countries including India (Recognised by Medical Council of India & Dental Council of India).

 

Student Accommodation

Students are offered to live in well heated and fully furnished comfortable rooms. Accommodation facilities for students are organized on the sharing basis. There are twin – and triple – rooms. Male and female students live separately on the different floors. All the hostels for students are protected by the police. There are special rooms for students where they can socialize, have fun and make new friends. All the rooms are provided with a bed, mattress, pillow, blanket, desk, chair, heater, and lighting, suitable for both: study and relaxation, as well as the Internet access and telephone for students to get in touch with their close friends and relatives.

 

 

Smolensk City

Smolensk is a city in Russia, the capital of the Smolensk region, located in the upper reaches of the Dnieper River, 400 km west of Moscow. It is an administrative, industrial and cultural center of the region.

Smolensk features

Today, Smolensk is a regional center, not the biggest, but very beautiful. In spite of all the destruction and wars, the city has preserved the spirit and beauty of an old town, miraculously survived pre-Mongolian churches, a lot of museums and the streets going up the hills overlooking the Dnieper River.

Smolensk is one of the oldest cities in Russia. It has an advantageous geographical location on the ways from Moscow to Belarus, Baltic States, the countries of Central and Western Europe.

The climate is temperate continental. The average temperature in January is minus 6.2 degrees Celsius, in July – plus 17.8 degrees Celsius.

City Day is celebrated on the last Friday of September.

Smolensk places of interest

Smolensk has a lot of old monasteries and churches, a number of different monuments: to Smolensk defenders of 1812, Kutuzov, Glinka, Lenin, Alexander Tvardovsky and Vasily Tyorkin, children who died in concentration camps (Burnt Flower).

 

Smolensk fortress wall (also known as Smolensk kremlin) is a defensive structure built in 1595-1602. The length of the walls is 6.5 km (only less than half of walls and towers are preserved). The fortress was of great military significance in the Russian state. Most of the fortress was destroyed by the troops of Emperor Napoleon I in 1812.

Cathedral of the Assumption. The cathedral was built on Soborny (Cathedral) Hill in memory of the heroic defense of Smolensk of 1609-1611. The construction was completed in 1772.

Napoleonic cannons in Smolensk. At the entrance to the Historical Museum, you can find two bronze cannons. Two similar cannons can also be found at the monument of the Patriotic War of 1812 in the city park. All four cannons were captured by the Russian army during the Patriotic War of 1812.

The memorial complex “Katyn”. It is an international memorial to the victims of political repression located in the Katyn forest, 22 km away from Smolensk.
