Novosibirsk State Medical University
In 2020 the Novosibirsk State Medical University (NSMU) celebrated its 85th anniversary! The history of the university is closely related to the history of public health services in Novosibirsk city, in south-western Siberia and, perhaps, in the entire country.
85 years in business means a rich history. Through all those years the NSMU has been fulfilling one mission which is teaching to heal people. The university has been teaching young men and women to understand the professional duty of a medical doctor to serve people and devote oneself to this service.
Teaching to heal is much more difficult than teaching any other professions in the world. Many generations of brilliant doctors and scientists have graduated from the NSMU over the years. Academicians, professors, leaders of numerous medical institutions are among our graduates. In 85 years, over 35 thousand of doctors graduated from the university. Year after year young doctors graduate into jobs in public health and in medical research.
The people who worked and studied at the NSMU over the years are the NSMU history. It is true that the history is made by people and the living proof of this are the 85 of NSMU graduates included in the list of NSMU Human Treasures. Their lives interlaced with the history of Novosibirsk and Russia demonstrate how one person can make a difference. By giving their knowledge, skills, and souls to the profession and society, these people imprinted their names in the history of NSMU.
NSMU is proud of all amazing people working here and contributing in the development of medicine not only in Novosibirsk and Russia but also in the entire world. The NSMU leaders today are established doctors who also work at the city clinics and hospitals.
Looking into the future of the Novosibirsk State Medical University, we can say with certainty that the university will continue its growth as it always has. 85 years ago the NSMU had only one faculty. Today we have 6 faculties but this is not our limit. Public health care institutions need doctors, accountants, lawyers, public health care specialists. We will continue to grow by breaking stereotypes, modernizing the education process, setting high standards for teachers and students to provide the society with exceptionally well trained specialists in public health care.

General Medicine
History: The Faculty of General Medicine is the first and the oldest faculty of the Novosibirsk State Medical University. It was opened in 1935. Its first 275 students were admitted in 1937.
Now the Faculty of General Medicine is the largest faculty of the Novosibirsk State Medical University!
Training: The Faculty of General Medicine provides training in General Medicine.
– The period of study: 6 years.
– Diploma: Doctor. Students are awarded doctor’s diploma and can get internship in therapy, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, ophtalmology, infectious diseases, cardiology and many other medical disciplines.
– For full-time students only.
The Faculty of General Medicine also offers residency and PhD programs.
Departments: The faculty has 33 departments: theoretical departments are located on the main campus and clinical departments are located at the leading hospitals of Novosibirsk. Highly qualified academic staff works at these departments and teach the students.
Academic Staff: Jver 285 people work at the Faculty of General Medicine. Among them there are 77 Doctors of Medicine, 4 academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciencesnand 153 PhD in Medical Sciences.
Students: Over 25000 medical doctors have graduated from the faculty in the past decade.
The Faculty of General Medicine is as old as the Novosibirsk State Medical University itself. It is constantly developing, confidently faces the future and is proud of its studentsm graduates and academic staff.
Pediatrics
History: The Pediatric Faculty of the Novosibirsk State Medical University was founded in 1965. The first admission was 80 students.
Now the Pediatric Faculty is a school of a high scientific and educational proficiency!
Training: The Pediatric Faculty trains specialists in Pediatrics.
– The period of study: 6 years.
– Diploma: Pediatrician. Students are awarded a diploma of Pediatrician and can continue their education as interns in pediatrics, neonatology, pediatric surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, therapy, oncology, infectious diseases and many other disciplines.
– For full-time students only.
The Pediatric Faculty also offers residency and PhD programs.
Departments: In 14 departments of the Pediatric Faculty (propedeutics of childhood diseases, infectious childhood diseases, surgical childhood diseases, etc.), the pediatric students study pediatric disciplines. In addition, they study diagnostics, prevention and treatment of adult diseases at 45 departments of other faculties.
Academic Staff: Over 140 people work at the Pediatric Faculty. Among them are 21 Professors, 38 Assistant Professors and 80 Assistants.
Students: Among over 1500 pediatricians currently practicing in the Novosibirsk region, 90% are the graduates of the NSMU Pediatric Faculty, 8 of them are Honored Doctors of the Russian Federation.
The Pediatric Faculty teaches students to work with children, forms a very special attitude towards the future profession as well as the utmost attentiveness, accuracy and communication skills.
Preventive Medicine
History: In 2011 the Faculty of Ecology was reorganized into the Faculty of Preventive Medicine.
Training:
- – Focus: Health and Prevention.
– Diploma: Medical Doctor.
– Period of study: 6 years.
– Full-time students only.
The Faculty of Preventive Medicine also offers internship in laboratory diagnostics, general hygiene, social hygiene and management of State Sanitary Epidemiological Service and epidemiology.
- – Focus: Medical Biochemistry.
– Diploma: Medical Doctor, Biochemist.
– The period of study: 6 years.
– Full-time students only.
The Faculty of Preventive Medicine also offers internship in genetics, clinical laboratory diagnostics, forensic and medical examination.
- – Focus: Medical Biophysics.
– Diploma: Medical Doctor, Biophysicist.
– The period of study: 6 years.
– Full-time students only.
The Faculty of Preventive Medicine also offers internship in clinical laboratory diagnostics, roentgenology, functional diagnostics and ultrasound diagnostics.
Departments: All the departments of the Faculty are located in the main building.
Academic Staff: The academic staff of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine includes Doctors of Medicine and PhDs in Medical Sciences.
Students: The graduates of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine can work in various medical institutions and clinical laboratories.
The Faculty of Preventive Medicine prepares highly trained professionals in prevention, diagnostics and medical, psychological and scientific research.
Pharmaceutic
History: The Pharmaceutical Faculty of the Novosibirsk State Medical University was founded in 2001.
Despite the fact that the Pharmaceutical Faculty is relatively young it offers quality training in pharmacy and is one of the most prestigious faculties of the Novosibirsk State Medical University!
Training: Pharmaceutical Faculty trains specialists in the field of pharmacy. It provides education according to the several educational programs:
– Secondary Professional Education (period of study: 2 years and 10 months, diploma: Pharmacy Dispenser).
– High Professional Education (the period of study: 5 years for full-time students or 5,5 years for part0time students, diploma: Pharmacist)
Pharmaceutical Faculty graduates can continue their education as interns in pharmacy management and accounting, pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy.
The Pharmaceutical Faculty also offers residency.
Departments: Students receive training at 6 Pharmaceutical Faculty departments and at selected departments of other faculties.
Academic Staff: Among 60 teachers and instructors are Professors, Doctors of Medicine, Associate Professors and PhDs in Medical Sciences.
Students: Among the students of the Faculty there are winners of various student awards. Students of the Pharmaceutical Faculty have numerous opportunities to attend national and international conferences.
The Pharmaceutical Faculty provides high quality education and prepares good specialists who work in pharmacies, pharmaceutical institutions, chemical and pharmaceutical factories all over the world.
Dentistry
History: The Dentistry Faculty of the Novosibirsk State Medical University was founded in 1978.
Now the Dentistry Faculty is one of the prestigious faculties at the Novosibirsk State Medical University!
Training: The Dentistry Faculty trains specialists according to the curriculum and programs of higher medical education.
– The period of study: 5 years.
– Diploma: Dentist with the focus on one of the following disciplines: dental surgeon, dental therapeutic, dental orthopedist or orthodontist.
– For full-time students only.
The Dentistry Faculty offers Residency and PhD programs.
Departments: Students of Dentistry Faculty are trained at 38 departments of the Novosibirsk State Medical University. The theoretical departments are located on the main campus of the University and the clinical departments are located in Novosibirsk dental clinics.
Teaching Staff: The Dentistry Faculty has highly skilled teaching staff. It consists of 123 dentists. Among them are 19 Doctors of Medicine and 63 PhDs in Medical Sciences.
Students: The Dentistry Faculty is home for more than 1000 students. Over 3000 specialists in dentistry have graduated from the Faculty so far.
Graduates of the Dentistry Faculty are highly qualified dental care specialists. They practice dentistry not only in Novosibirsk and Novosibirsk region but all over the world.
Psychology
History: The Faculty of Clinical Psychology of the Novosibirsk State Medical University was founded in 2004.
Training: During the course of study at the Faculty of Clinical Psychology students study both basic subjects like general and social psychology and special disciplines such as clinical psychology, mental therapy, psychosomatics, pathopsychology, etc.
– Diploma: Psychologist. Clinical Psychologist. Psychology Instructor.
– Period of study: 5,5 years.
– For full-time students only.
Departments: The Faculty of Clinical Psychology has 4 departments. The main department is the Department of Clinical Psychology. Classes are offered on the main campus of the university.
Academic Staff: Among the highly skilled teaching staff of the Faculty of Clinical Psychology are Doctors of Medicine and PhDs in Medical Sciences.
Students: Students successfully completed the course of studies receive a diploma of Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist and Psychology Instructor.
Graduates of the Faculty of Clinical Psychology work at various medical and research institutions and psychology centers.
The Faculty of Clinical Psychology trains professionals in psychological diagnostics, consulting and rehabilitation psychosomatics, neuropsychology, psychiatry, psychological correction in children with development disorders.
Social Work
History: The Faculty of Social Work of the Novosibirsk State Medical University was founded in 2002. It is one of the youngest faculties of the University.
Training: The aim of the Faculty of Social Work is to train social work specialists. Students gain knowledge in psychology, pedagogy and other social sciences.
– Diploma: Bachelor of Social Work
– Period of study: 4 years for full-time students and 5 years for part-time students.
Students receive practical training in actual rehabilitation centers, orphanages, departments of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and in other institutions. This experience helps students to test their abilities in real life situations.
Departments: The Faculty of Social Work has 4 departments which are located on the main campus.
Academic Staff: Teaches and instructors are highly qualified professors, managers and social workers.
Students: Graduates of the Faculty of Social Work work in state and public social institutions, charities, emergency response organizations, police stations, schools, kinder gardens, orphanages and other children organizations.
The Faculty of Social Work provides quality education and trains highly professional social workers.
Student Accommodation
Dormitory rooms are offered by the University. The dormitories are located in front of the entrance of the Laboratory Building, only a 3-minute walk from the University. International students usually live in double-rooms in block-type dormitories. A block is composed of one or two rooms and a bathroom equipped with a shower and toilets. Each floor is equipped with furnished kitchens and a leisure room.
Novosibirsk City
Novosibirsk is a city in Russia, the capital of the Novosibirsk region and Siberian Federal District. It is the third largest city of the country after Moscow and St. Petersburg, one of the largest Russian business, cultural, industrial, scientific, trade, and transport centers.
Novosibirsk features
Novosibirsk is located in the south-eastern part of the West Siberian Plain, near the reservoir formed by the dam of the Novosibirsk hydroelectric power station. The city has a continental climate. The average temperature in January is minus 16.5 degrees Celsius, in July – plus 19.4 degrees Celsius.
Novosibirsk City Day is officially celebrated on the last Sunday in June. The largest hotels in Novosibirsk are Marins Park Hotel Novosibirsk, Hotel River Park (Ob hotel), Azimut Hotel Siberia, Tsentralnaya (Central) Hotel, Zolotaya Dolina (Golden Valley) in Akademgorodok. Also the city has hotels of such global hotel chains as Swissotel, Hilton Hotels, Radisson, Marriott International, and others.
It is a major transport hub connecting Siberia, the Far East, Central Asia with the European part of Russia. The city is served by the international airport “Tolmachevo” located 17 km from the center of Novosibirsk. The airport offers regular passenger flights to major cities of Russia, countries of the former Soviet Union, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, China, Czech Republic, Greece, Cyprus, Vietnam, Thailand. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the city. Novosibirsk is also an important port on the Ob River.
The main industries are machine building, electric power generation, metallurgy, and food. Novosibirsk is home to the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences located like almost all other higher education institutes in a separate suburb named Akademgorodok (meaning “the town of academicians”).
