Established in 1935, Kursk State Medical University is ranked as one of the top 10 best Russian Medical Universities. Among its many achievements, KSMU was the first University in Russia to offer students a full Medical training program in the English language.
Within the structure of KSMU we also have a Research Institute of Ecological Medicine as well as a consulting diagnostic policlinic and medical institute. To date KSMU has trained over 25,000 medical professionals across 14 faculties and 67 departments.
The staff body consists of 633 academic staff of which there are 333 Ph.D. and 92 D.Sc. academics serving our 6,400 students. The university boasts a well-stocked library with a subscription of more than 500,000 journals, books and publications. The campus includes four teaching buildings as well as five student halls of residence. Students also enjoy the recreational facilities onsite including three sports halls and a shooting range.

General Medicine
The faculty was established in 1935. Since then more than 20,000 medics have been trained by and graduated from the faculty. Among the faculty graduates of all years there are 120 D.Sc. and more than 650 Ph.D. Many graduates have established new schools and original scientific trends. These are academicians of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences V.N. Nikolaeva-Menshikova, V.S. Ryabtsev, Yu.K. Skripkin, V.G. Gostishev, corresponding –members of RAMS A.F. Bykovsky, V.L. Guryev, O.K. Skobelkin, G.Ye. Ostroverkhov.
The training is provided at 49 departments of the University. The faculty teaching staff of 400 teachers include 70 D.Sc. 275 Ph.D., 2 honored scientists of the Russian Federation, honored worker of higher school of the Russian Federation, more than 35 academicians and corresponding – members of the Russian and international academies. 10 honored physicians of the Russian Federation work at the departments of the clinical profile, actually all the teachers have the higher or the first medical category.
The curriculum consists of 5 blocks of disciplines: humanities and socio-economic sciences, natural sciences, medico-biological, medico-preventive and clinical disciplines.
Medical faculty graduates take further clinical specialization course in 35 specialties, internship course in 28 specialties, post-graduate course in 47 specialties. The sphere of the professional activity of the graduates is determined by the acquired specialty and includes public health, social protection, medical and biological sciences, medical education, medical service in military structures, economy of public health.
Dentistry
The faculty of Stomatology was opened at Kursk State Medical University in 1997. At present more than 300 students are currently being trained at the faculty.
Training is provided at 49 departments of the University. The faculty teaching staff comprises 60 D.Sc., 177 Ph.D., 2 honored scientists of the Russian Federation, more than 35 academicians and corresponding –members of different Russian and international academies. 10 honored physicians of the Russian Federation work at the departments of the clinical profile, actually all the teachers have the higher or the first medical category.
The curriculum consists of 6 blocks of disciplines: humanities and socio-economic sciences, natural sciences, medico-biological, medico-preventive, clinical and special disciplines.
On completion the fifth years of the stomatological faculty the graduates undergo further clinical specialization or internship course in 5 specialties.
The sphere of the professional activity of the graduate may be medico-preventive institutions, scientific research institutes and laboratories of the medical profile, higher or secondary educational institutions where a graduate may work as a physician-stomatologist, a research assistant or a teacher.
Pediatrics
The faculty of Paediatrics was opened on September, 2000. In 2006 the first specialists graduated from the University.
Training is provided at 46 departments of the University. The faculty teaching staff of 400 teachers, comprises 70 D.Sc., 275 Ph.D., 2 honored scientists of the Russian Federation, 1 honored worker of higher school, more than 30 academicians and corresponding –members of different Russian and international academies. 10 honored physicians of the Russian Federation work at the departments of the clinical profile, actually all the teachers have the higher or the first medical category.
In teaching clinical disciplines, special attention is paid to the subjects of the pediatric profile. For three years students study children diseases, paediatric surgery, polyclinic pediatrics, children infectious diseases.
Post-diploma specialization is provided in three specialties:
children diseases, paediatric surgery, neonatology. Graduates of the faculty have an opportunity to be engaged in all medico-preventive institutions of the paediatric profile (polyclinics, hospitals, sanatoriums, preventoriums), they are also offered to continue training in internship or undergo clinical specialization.
Nursing
The faculty of Higher Nursing was opened on September 1, 1992.
Training is provided at 45 departments of the University. With the purpose of improving the quality of training managers of nursing, the faculty of nursing was organized at the University in 1993. The faculty teaching staff of 400 teachers, comprises 70 D.Sc., 275 Ph.D., 2 honored scientists of the Russian Federation, 1 honored worker of higher school, more than 30 academicians and corresponding –members of different Russian and international academies. 10 honored physicians of the Russian Federation work at the departments of clinical profile, actually all the teachers have the higher or the first medical category.
The curriculum consists of 5 blocks of disciplines: humanities and socio-economic sciences, natural sciences, medico-biological, medico-preventive, and clinical disciplines.
On completion the faculty, graduates take an internship course. The faculty graduates head nursing services of the leading medico-preventive institutions of the Kursk and adjacent regions. They work as physicians-statisticians, teachers in medical colleges or at the department of nursing.
Preventive Medicine
The faculty was organized on 1 September 1997.
Training is provided at 49 departments of the University. With the purpose of improving the quality of training managers of nursing, the faculty of nursing was organized at the University in 1993. On completion the faculty, graduates are given an opportunity to work in services and institutions for supervision in the sphere of consumer rights and well – being of a man, health care and preventive institutions of any organizational and legal forms, scientific research institutions of the hygienic and epidemic profile.
Clinical Psychology
Since 1999 Kursk State Medical University has been preparing specialists of the specialty − “Clinical Psychology”.
Graduates of the faculty work successfully in institutions of Public Health, establishments giving psychological support to citizens of the Kursk Region and in institutes of higher education in Kursk and Russia.
Students are taught by 37 specialists who have basic psychological education and also by leading specialists of the system of practical Public Health. Among working staff there are 6 Doctors of Science, 14 candidates of Science, one member of the International Academy of Psychological Sciences, one member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, 2 members of the Petrovskij Academy of Science and Art, one member of the International Academy of Science of Pedagogical Education. On the faculty there is a laboratory of experimental psychology, a center of psychological support for students. Students of the faculty learn thoroughly disciplines of the specialization on the basis of institutions of Public Health and establishments giving psychological support to citizens of Kursk. The curriculum includes the following blocs of disciplines: general-mathematical and natural-scientific, general-humanitarian and social-economical and also the bloc of general-professional disciplines and disciplines of specializations, special trainings and supervision.
A specialist with high psychological education of the specialty “Clinical Psychology” is allowed to give psychotherapeutic support along with a psychotherapist, work as a medical psychologist in institutions of Public Health, work in the sphere of practical psychology and teach psychology in higher educational establishments.
Pharmacy
Established in 1966 the faculty has enjoyed 40 years of success training than 10,000 pharmacists since it began activities. They are engaged in practical pharmacy in all regions of Russia. Among the faculty graduates of all years there are 23 D.Sc. and 123 Ph.D. Among founders of new schools and original trends are professor, corresponding–member of the International Academy of Informatization V.L. Bazarny, professor V.N. Bubenchikova, professor, corresponding –member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences G.A. Chaly, professor T.A. Pankrusheva, professor L.Ye. Siplivaya.
The training of pharmacists is provided at 28 departments of the University. The faculty teaching staff includes 40 D.Sc, more than 150 Ph.D.
The curriculum consists of 4 blocks of disciplines: humanities and socio-economic sciences, natural sciences, medico-biological, professional and specialty disciplines. The course graduates can obtain the basic specialty having undergone training in internship (primary one year study) in the following specialties:
Pharmaceutical Administration and Economics, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy or in full-time or correspondence post- graduate course.
The sphere of the professional activity of the graduates comprises effective administrative and productive activity: in pharmaceutical institutions and companies, in the centers for quality control of medicinal drugs (control and analytical laboratories), in toxicological and biochemical laboratories, at pharmaceutical enterprises, in research institutes, etc.
Student Accommodation
KSMU provides enough places in the hostels for all international students with comfortable living condition and affordable annual fee. Out of 6 (six) blocks of students hostel, 3 (three) modern hostels available for international students are very close to the University (about 5 to 10 minutes walking distance). All hostels are supplied with cold and hot water and central heating system, each room contains beds, a desk, chairs and storage space.
At present there are 5 hostels in KSMU. Foreign students live in hostels No. 1, 4, 5 and the pharm. college hostel. All hostels are situated close to the University and are supplied with central heating, cold and hot water and the necessary furniture. Good living conditions, location near the University and reasonable fees make hostels the best place to stay. In every hostel there is a tutor who works with foreign students.
There are 2 types of room provided:
2 sitters room ( one room shared by 2 students)
3 sitters room (one room shared by 3 students)
Of course students are free to choose either to live in the hostel or outdoors. There are many apartments available in Kursk region in affordable price. More than 20% of the international students live outdoors.
Due to the large number of international students attending KSMU we have special arrangements with other colleges where our international students can reside for the duration of their course. All of our partner halls of residence are maintained to the same high standards of comfort and safety expected from the main KSMU student halls of residence. Our partner halls of residence are located very close to the university (10-15minutes walk).
Kursk City
Kursk is a city in Russia, the capital of the Kursk region, situated in the western part of central Russia, 530 km south of Moscow. It is an important cultural and religious center with a large industrial complex, a number of scientific and educational centers, a highway and railway hub.
Kursk features
The ancient land of Kursk is one of the spiritual centers of Orthodox Russia. The most renowned Russian monks and mystics Feodosiy Pechersky, Iosaf Belgorodsky, Serafim Sarovsky prayed here.
The City Day is celebrated in September. The climate is temperate continental. The average temperature in January is minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, in July – plus 21 degrees Celsius.
Kursk is a major industrial center: electrical engineering, instrument-making and machine tools, machinery and equipment for agriculture, food and processing industry, production of commercial equipment, chemical fibers, rubber products, furniture, pharmaceutical production. About 30% of the industrial potential of the Kursk region is concentrated in the city.
Kursk has an international airport “Vostochny” located 7 km to the east of the city center (scheduled flights to Moscow and St. Petersburg).
Two important railway lines pass through Kursk: Moscow – Kharkov (Ukraine) and Voronezh – Kiev (Ukraine).
Kursk roads have access to the federal highway M2 “Crimea”, as well as the highway A144 (Kursk – Voronezh – Saratov) and P199 (Kursk – the Ukrainian border).
Public transportation is carried out mini-buses, buses, trolley buses, and trams.
