Altai State Medical University (AGMU) is one of the leading medical universities of Russia in the West Siberian part, conducting high-quality medical training. Altai State Medical University is located in the southeast of Russia in Barnaul city, the capital of Altai Krai. For sixty years the Altai State Medical University has been a supply of qualified specialists engine for the regional healthcare system. 25 thousand doctors and pharmaceutics have graduated from the university, who work in the Altai region, in the Republics of Altai and Tuva, in countries near and far abroad. 90% of doctors and pharmaceutics in the Altai region are the AGMU alumni.

Altai State Medical University is administered by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation in accordance with the decree of the Russian Government. It is one of the major hubs for research, education and cultural exchange. The international university community keeps their social heritage and adopts each other’s culture and traditions. The University has produced more than 30,000 graduates. There are more than 4000 students studying yearly at AGMU. Most of the students are from the Russian Federation with about 350 international students.

International Educational Activities

Altai State Medical University began accepting foreign students in 1991. In February 1994, the faculty of foreign students has been organized. The faculty carries out the preparation of foreign students in the specialties: “General Medicine”, “Pharmacy”, “Pediatrics”, “Dentistry”.

In 2001, the Department reorganized into the department to work with foreigners. Today, Altai medical university has about 2000 international students from India, Sri Lanka, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, China, Mongolia, Morocco, Afghanistan, as well as citizens neighboring countries: Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Belarus, Armenia, Uzbekistan.

Science and Innovation: Innovative scientific development is a priority activity of the university. The desire of the university to meet modern trends of the state policy in the field of innovation in science and technology is the basis of successful implementation of scientific projects ASMU scientists. Altai State Medical University is actively involved in the implementation of innovative projects in the field of basic and clinical research.  Altai State Medical University (ASMU) is one of the leading West Siberian medical universities conducting high quality medical training.

The six faculties of the university (The Faculties of General Medicine, Pediatrics, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Preventive Medicine and The Faculty of Foreign Students) train approximately 6000 students a year. There is an extensive post graduate program as well as a retraining program for medical personnel. The Institute of Pre-University Training and the Institute of Postgraduate Training provide continuous professional development of ASMU students and postgraduates.

Students and specialists from 19 countries study at ASMU this year. They are: India, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and others). ASMU has its Association of Foreign Students.

The Faculty of General Medicine

The faculty was founded in 1954 and since then it has grown to become one of the largest medical faculties in the Russian Federation. The faculty graduates work in various health care institutions, in health care management, medical educational institutions, research institutions and social services.

Graduates of the faculty get a General Practitioner qualification, which is sufficient for treating adolescents (age 15-18) and adults (over 18). Residency training allows the graduates to get the qualification of a narrow specialist: a surgeon, an obstetrician-gynecologist, neurologist, psychiatrist, and others.

Within the Faculty of General Medicine, there is a Department of Advanced Nursing which trains bachelors in Nursing Care. The students are trained to be highly qualified professionals in managing, training and clinical fields. ASMU is the only university in Siberian Federal District which trains students in Advanced Nursing.

In 2016 the Faculty of Foreign Students was organized in the university.

The Faculty of Pediatrics

Founded in 1966, the faculty trains highly qualified personnel to work with children. There are approximately 1000 students who get extensive training not only in clinical departments which specialize in children health care but they also trained to diagnose, treat and prevent some adult diseases. Such a program allows to train highly qualified specialists with multifold career opportunities.

The Faculty of Dentistry

The faculty was founded in 1990 and now there are approximately 800 students there. The training is focused on practicing the necessary professional skills in dental care. There are special phantom classes and modern ASMU dental clinic. The graduates get a qualification of a Dental Practitioner. Residency training allows the graduates to get the qualification of a narrow specialist: a surgeon dentist, a dental orthopedist, a periodontist, an orthodontist and a pediatric dentist.

The Faculty of Pharmacy

Founded in 1975, the faculty trains specialists for medicine manufacturing and sales. The faculty graduates have become co-owners and managers of pharmaceutical enterprises, research workers and professors of medical universities.

There are about 700 students at the faculty. The graduates of the faculty are in great demand due to the growth of medicine production and the enlargement of pharmaceutical sales network.

The Faculty of Preventive Medicine

Opened in 2001, the faculty aims at training personnel for sanitation and hygiene services and epidemiologists for health care institutions. There are about 300 students at the faculty specializing in hygiene and epidemiology. These specialists are needed to solve the problem of sanitary and epidemiological welfare in the territories of the Russian Federation.

The Faculty of Foreign Students

The youngest faculty which opened in 2016. The students of the faculty are trained English language in “General Medicine” and “Dentistry”. The professors are highly qualified and trained to teach students in English.

Today, the Faculty is a united multinational one where people from all over the world are being trained to become medical specialists. The student of the faculty participate in all kinds of social, cultural, scientific and sports activities.

Pre-university Course

The most experienced ASMU professors are engaged in the preparatory 9-month course for foreigners. There are classes in Russian, Chemistry and Biology. This course helps to enter the university successfully. Students’residence is available to the course students.

 Student Accommodation

There are four dormitories for ASMU students, which are located in the center of the city. The dorms are close to the main public transport routs, which makes the most important destinations accessible. There are playing and sports grounds, reading halls which help our students to use their time most efficiently and in an enjoyable way.

Barnaul City

Barnaul is a city in Russia, the capital of Altai Krai, located in the south of Western Siberia, at the place where the Barnaulka River flows into the Ob. It is a major transport, industrial, cultural, and educational center of Siberia.

Barnaul – Features

Barnaul is located in the forest-steppe zone of the West Siberian Plain, in the upper reaches of the Ob River, mainly on its left bank, at the confluence of the Barnaulka River with the Ob. The distance to Moscow is about 3,600 km. The nearest major city is Novosibirsk (230 km). Barnaul is located at the same latitude as Hamburg, Dublin, Liverpool, Minsk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Samara, Magnitogorsk, and Edmonton.

The climate in the city is continental with frosty, moderately severe, snowy winters and warm , moderately humid summers. The coldest month of the year is January (the average temperature is minus 15.5 degrees Celsius), the warmest month is July (plus 19.9 degrees Celsius). The number of sunny days in Barnaul is 230 days, which is comparable with the southern resort cities of Russia.

Barnaul is one of the most important economic centers of Western Siberia. The city’s economy is mainly based on trade and services. The basis of its industrial complex is made up of about 120 large and medium-sized enterprises with 22 thousand employees. The largest increase in production volumes is shown by enterprises manufacturing vehicles, equipment, as well as metalworking, chemical, processing enterprises.

This city is a major transport hub. The federal highway A322 Barnaul – Rubtsovsk – the border with the Republic of Kazakhstan begins here. Railways belonging to the West Siberian Railway pass through barnaul. G.S. Titov International Airport is located 17 km west of the city (regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Sochi, and others). There is a passenger river station and a cargo river port on the Ob River.

Initially, the city was built on the model of St. Petersburg, which largely determined the appearance of its central part.
