About Pskov

Pskov is the administrative center of Pskovsky region and, within the framework of administrative divisions, it also serves as the administrative center of Pskovsky District. The city’s population is over 203,279 people.

Pskov still preserves much of its medieval walls which were built in the 13th century. There is a medieval citadel called the Krom (the Kremlin), and within its walls the 256-feet-tall (78 m) Trinity Cathedral is located which was founded in 1138 and rebuilt in the 1690s. Pskov is exceedingly rich in small picturesque churches, many of them dating mainly from the 15th and the 16th centuries. On 7 July 2019, the Church of the Pskov School of Architecture was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 17th century residential architecture is represented by merchant mansions such as the Salt House, the Pogankin Palace, and the Trubinsky mansion.

The Pskov Fortress, which was one of the largest in medieval Europe (the length of its walls was 9.5 km in total), as well as the Pokrovskaya Tower, are considered to be one of the most impregnable towers of Europe.

The city has a large number of parks and botanical gardens. The Governor House, The Fomichev’s House and the Rodina movie theatre are main attractions of the city.

Pskov is home to a number of museums, for example, Pskov State Museum-Reserve of History, Architecture and Art, Museum-Apartment of Yury Spegal’sky, Lenin Museum and Railway museum.

The city is eco-friendly, ever-green and with well-developed infrastructure. Pskov has a favourable geographical position: the city is located close to such cities as Saint Petersburg, Riga, Tallinn and Minsk, and it is only 50 km away from the borders of the European Union.

The climate here is humid continental due to the city’s relative proximity to the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland, with relatively soft winters and warm summers.

Pskov is home to numerous universities where it is possible to gain solid education, become a master in a specific field and make one’s dreams a reality. One of the best universities in the city is considered to be Pskov State University.
