Saint Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics

ITMO University is a large state university in Saint Petersburg and is one of Russia’s National Research Universities. ITMO University is one of 15 Russian universities that were selected to participate in Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100 by the government of the Russian Federation to improve their international competitiveness among the world’s leading research and educational centers.

Research priorities of ITMO University are concentrated in information and photonic technologies.

The university consists of 18 departments, 7 research institutes and one academy, with a total of 119 chairs. As of April 1, 2014, the total number of students is 13,890, with over 900 being foreign nationals. The university employs 1,163 instructors, including over 800 PhDs. Many of its staff members and researchers have received government awards and designations of “honored science worker,” the highest in Russia. Vladimir Vasilyev has been the university’s Rector since 1996.

ITMO University has several dormitories at its disposal, all conveniently located either within the limits of its “student town” or next to the metro stations in St. Petersburg. All campuses of ITMO University are also located within walking distance to the metro stations.

Once you are officially an ITMO University student you are entitled to use the services of the healthcare clinic located at the main campus of ITMO University – Kronverksky ave, 49. Some of the services include first aid, treatment of a variety of acute illnesses, minor injuries and burns, vaccinations, preventive medicine. The doctor can also make referrals to specialists.

The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 9 am till 3 pm. If you are feeling acutely sick and unable to go to class, please visit the doctor till noon to receive a medical excuse note.

Students and staff are welcome to use sporting facilities on Vyazemski Pereulok, 5/7 free of charge. The sports center consists of a full-size basketball court, a gym with a variety of workout equipment and a climbing wall.

ITMO University also has a Student Sports Club “Kronbars,” which boasts over 20 sports teams, ranging from basketball and soccer to table tennis and cheerleading. It also offers access to individual sports such as yoga and swimming at various facilities around town.
