Daghestan State Technical University is a big educational scientific and cultural centre of the south of Russia, a higher school of innovative type with a high intellectual and scientific potential. Since its creation the University has trained more than 40000 specialists of the most demanded engineering professions for many branches of industry of the Republic and the country.

The history of creation of FSBEE HPE “DGTU” dates back to 24 January 1970, when the Council of Ministers of the USSR enacted by-law on the organization of Daghestan State Polytechnic Institute. By order No 330 of the Minister of Higher and Specialized Secondary Education of the RSFSR of 17 August 1971 the structure of Daghestan State Polytechnic Institute, list of departments, laboratories, and classrooms as well as the consultative body of the Institute were confirmed, and by order No 71 of the RSFSR Ministry of Higher Schools of 24 February 1971 all the organizational issues were settled up, and in 1972 the institute was set up. Mechanical, Instrument-Making, Building and Technological faculties were considered to form the structure of the Institute.

The necessity in establishing a higher school of technical profile in Daghestan appeared not by chance.  The late 50-s and the early 60-s of the XX century were marked by the rapid development of exact sciences, outer space exploration, technical modernization of the country, and as a result, a rapid growth of industry and the attempt to improve industrial and agrarian sectors of economy in the regions historically formed as agricultural ones. For construction and exploitation of big industrial enterprises there was a need in own local engineering skills. The development of production capacity of the republic, a great scope of fundamental constructions required the acceleration of engineering skills training, and a number of new specialties opening.

The first rector of Daghestan Polytechnic Institute was Kamil Maghomedovich Magomedov, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, a big Russian scientist in the sphere of computing gas dynamics. Having headed the Institute since the very foundation for 13 years Kamil Magomedov contributed a lot into the development of the higher school that greatly influenced the technical science formation in Daghestan and the industrial development of all the North Caucasian republics.

After appointing K. M. Magomedov as the Chairman of the Daghestan Academy of Science Presidium in 1985, Mail Sultanovich Aminov headed the Institute. Scientific and research work developed and a lot of different scientific equipment and devices were bought at the period of M. Aminov’s being at the head of the Institute.

In 1995 by order No 852 of the State Committee on Education of the RF Daghestan Polytechnic Institute was transformed into Daghestan State Technical University.
