Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University (SyktSU) is a rapidly developing university with more than a half century of history. It is the largest university in the Komi Republic and provides all levels of higher education. The university has an advanced infrastructure for science and innovation that are supported by university’s active cooperation with the local business community and the policy-makers. In 2017 SyktSU received the status of the Russian flagship university (among only 33 Russian HEIs).
The university’s 434 staff members, who take care of the teaching at the university, are highly skilled professionals — 58% of them have a Ph.D. and 15% a D.Sc. degree. Moreover, the university offers its students a wide variety of educational programs: more than 7,800 university students are spread over to about 100 bachelor’s and master’s programs.

Rooms are fully furnished and consist of an apartment like system with a two bed with an attached toilet. On each floor, there is a common hall and a common kitchen for cooking. On the ground floor, there is a gym cum recreation center including a table tennis table. Hostel rooms come furnished with beds, mattress, pillows, blanket, two side tables, one cupboard per room and one table and chair per room. Occupants get a weekly change of bed-sheet and pillowcase. Hot water is available in designated hours. All rooms are centrally heated. A plumber, carpenter, and electrician are available on call.

Syktyvkar is a city in Russia, the capital and the largest city of Komi Republic, standing on the left bank of the Sysola River, 1,302 km north-east of Moscow.
Syktyvkar means “the town on the Sysola River” in the Komi language.
The climate is temperate continental, with short, but quite warm summers and pretty cold long winters. The average temperature in January is minus 14.2 degrees Celsius, in July – plus 17.5 degrees Celsius.
Syktyvkar is an industrial center of the region. There are about 40 large plants in the city, one third of them are of national importance. Woodworking, pulp and paper industries are the leading industries of the local economy. Also it is one of the largest research centers of the European North of Russia. There are about 30 research institutions in the city.
Buses and taxis are the main types of urban transport. Syktyvkar is the final destination of the highway R176 “Vyatka”. Syktyvkar airport offers flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm, Kazan, Ekaterinburg, Samara, Naryan-Mar, Kirov.
