he leading technological and scientific university of the Altai region, Altai State Technical University (AltSTU) is one of a number of universities of the city of Barnaul, Altai Krai, Russia. It is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Russia.
It was founded in February 1942 based on the part of Zaporizhie Automechanical Institute (which was evacuated to Siberia because of World War II).
Altay State University is named after Ivan Polzunov who was the famous Russian inventor of two-cylinder steam engine for the use in mining industry.
The University offers full-time, part-time, extramural and distant training. On graduating students receive degrees of Bachelor (four-year study) and Master (two year) as well as specialist diplomas (old system, five-year study). Post-graduate courses are also offered.
The facilities of the university include: 7 academic buildings, a complex of hostels, a large scientific library, computing center, publishing house, student clubs, a theater (the Kaleidoscope student theatre), a preventive clinic, as well as a skiing lodge, private swimming pool, sports and rest camp by the river Ob.

Barnaul is a city in Russia, the capital of Altai Krai, located in the south of Western Siberia, at the place where the Barnaulka River flows into the Ob. It is a major transport, industrial, cultural, and educational center of Siberia.

Barnaul is located in the forest-steppe zone of the West Siberian Plain, in the upper reaches of the Ob River, mainly on its left bank, at the confluence of the Barnaulka River with the Ob. The distance to Moscow is about 3,600 km. The nearest major city is Novosibirsk (230 km). Barnaul is located at the same latitude as Hamburg, Dublin, Liverpool, Minsk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Samara, Magnitogorsk, and Edmonton.
The climate in the city is continental with frosty, moderately severe, snowy winters and warm, moderately humid summers.
