The history of higher education in Sakhalin Oblast goes back to 1949 when Sakhalin State University, known then as a teacher training institute, opened its doors. And for 70 years ever since, Sakhalin State University has been the most important educational institution in the island region, providing young people with a full range of training and development opportunities.
Nowadays, Sakhalin State University offers degree programs in Science, Teaching, Social Sciences, Humanities, Economics, Engineering and Technology, and it also operates a successful system of pre-university training and further education. The University is made up of five institutes, Polytechnic College, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Teachers’ Training College, along with the branch campuses in Okha and in Aleksandrovsk-Sakhalinsky.
The policy of educational quality is the basis of the sustainable development of the University. Its main principle is continuous professional education of the academic staff. The academic staff treat the history of their university with respect, honoring, preserving and developing the teaching and educational traditions as well as the scientific traditions of their predecessors. At the same time, they find modern and up-to-date approaches to meet the challenges facing higher education in the 21st century.
Sakhalin State University has many facilities to ensure effective implementation of the vocational education and higher education programs, such as modern multimedia classrooms, research laboratories, research and training centers, a satellite station and an archaeological museum. The scientific activity of the University is focused on implementing research results into the economic development of the region. It is in this regard that Sakhalin State University serves as the region’s main research center which prioritizes on contributing to the social and economic development of Sakhalin Oblast.
The University pays much attention to scientific activities, considering it as a key factor for successful development by enhancing the capacity of academic staff, improving the quality of educational services and involving students in research. The University houses the Sakhalin Science Technological Engineering Mathematics Centre. The center has dozens of laboratories and training simulators for students to explore special equipment and thus to have an in-depth study of their future profession. The University has also opened a laboratory for physical and chemical analysis to conduct research on different environmental issues caused by oil and gas production. Two months before the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sakhalin State University set up a research station in conjunction with Russian Academy of Sciences. The station was originally designed for tracking the satellite, but now it uses satellite remote sensing data to carry out research in biology, geology, meteorology, geophysics, cartography and geodesy.
The university graduates find jobs in oil and gas, law enforcement, education, banking, in the fishing industry, as well as in tax offices and in the governments of the city, areas and region. The latest annual survey shows that 86% of the graduates are employed by the end of the year. This is one of the best records in Russia.
Sakhalin State University is engaged in various kinds of international activities. For more than a quarter of a century, it has been establishing partnerships with universities in Japan, South Korea and China. The University is cooperating with such educational institutions as Pusan University of Foreign Studies (the Republic of Korea), Dongseo University (the Republic of Korea), Sapporo International University (Japan), Tokai University (Japan), Hokkaido University (Japan), Harbin Normal University (China), Harbin Vocational & Technical College (China) and many others. The international cooperation is aimed at creating joint educational programs and developing open educational resources. The University is carrying out student mobility programs and other joint projects with many educational institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.
Sakhalin State University places a high value on attracting and developing young people living on the islands. It promotes student volunteering and students’ autonomy by enacting a system of student self-government. In December 2018, this system was recognized as the best in the Far East. Any student of the university, who is eager to suggest an interesting project, will always find support and opportunities to implement it. The university students are actively involved in social, political, scientific and cultural affairs of the country. They represent their university, their islands, their country at various federal and international competitions, olympiads, festivals and conferences.
Over a period of 70 years, Sakhalin State University transformed itself from a small remote institution into an important educational, scientific and cultural center by making significant contributions to the social and economic life of the region.

There is a large blocks of flats housing of students, with fully furnished bedrooms organized around corridors or apartments with a shared kitchen. Free 24 hrs. gas, electricity, hot & cold water and phone available for students.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk City
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a city in the Far East of Russia, the capital of the Sakhalin region, located in the south-eastern part of Sakhalin Island, on the Susuya River, about 9,200 km from Moscow. It is the largest transport hub on the island.
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk features
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is located in a seismically hazardous area. Strong earthquakes are highly probable. The houses are built in accordance with special methods. The city is located relatively far from the sea, about 50 km from the west coast, 25 km from the east coast and 20 km from the south coast.
From the east Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is protected by the mountains. The city is located in the valley surrounded by hills, that is why its climate is very specific. Summers can be very hot and winters – very frosty (because of lack of winds).
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport (Khomutovo) is an international airport of federal significance located about 10 kilometers from the city center. Regular flights to Blagoveshchensk, Vladivostok, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Khabarovsk, Yakutsk, Seoul (South Korea), Tokyo (Japan) are available.
The climate is temperate monsoon. January is the coldest month, the average temperature is minus 12,2 degrees Celsius. August is the warmest month, the average temperature – plus 17,3 degrees Celsius.
The headquarters of the company “Sakhalinenergo”, the largest power company in the Russian East, is located in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The consulates of South Korea, Japan, the Netherlands are open in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
