Izhevsk State Medical Academy is a leading higher medical education provider in the Russian Federation. It is proud of its highly-qualified teaching staff, advanced researchers and experienced professors whose names are world-famous.
The academy was established in 1933 and over the time of 80 years it has trained more than 21500 doctors and other medical specialists . Nowadays 351 teachers including 86 Doctors of Medicine and 212 Candidates of Medicine provide a high level of teaching process at 52 departments and 28 clinical bases of the academy. Over 2800 students study at the academy including the foreign ones.
The academy has been training international students since 1988. Students from 113 states of the former Soviet Union, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa have studied at our academy. Over this period 3000 medics, dentists and pediatricians have been trained for foreign countries.
Much is done to organize international exchanges for students and young doctors. The academy has general agreements of educational and scientific cooperation with the University of Pecs, CVI, Semmelweis University (Hungary), Medical University of Silesia (Poland), Oulton instituto de diagnostico y tratamiento (Argentina), Aristotle University of Thesaloniki (Greece), Novi Sad University (Serbia), Belarus State Medical University (The Republic of Belarus), University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Ivanovo-Frankovsk State Medical University (Ukraine), Samarkand Medical Institute (Uzbekistan) and others. During 25 years more than 300 students from Italy, Germany, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Spain, Finland, Denmark, Macedonia, etc. participated in externships at the academy. In its turn more than700 students and young scientists of Izhevsk State Medical Academy participated in externship in other countries.

There are three dormitories which are located close to the academy within accessibility of the public transport. Total number of beds is 1500 and there are all necessary facilities inside. Medical care is available at the medical point of the academy and dental centre too. Medical insurance is compulsory for all foreign students.

Izhevsk is located in the eastern part of the East European Plain, between the Vyatka and Kama rivers, on the non-navigable Izh River. The main reservoir of the city is the Izhevsk Pond. Created in the second half of the 18th century, the Izhevsk Pond is one of the largest artificial reservoirs in Eastern Europe.
The name of the city comes from the name of the Izh River on the bank of which the Izhevsk Ironworks was built and a village was founded in 1760. The City Day of Izhevsk is celebrated on June 12.
The climate is temperate continental with short warm summers and long cold winters. The warmest month is July with an average temperature of plus 19 degrees Celsius. The coldest month is January, its average temperature is minus 12.4 degrees Celsius.
Izhevsk is a developed industrial center of Udmurtia and the Urals. This city is known in Russia and in the world for the production of high-quality steels, advanced mechanical engineering, in particular: the production of weapons and military equipment, small arms and rifles, cars, and instruments. The legendary designer of small arms, General Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov is an Honorary Citizen of Izhevsk.
The largest transport hub in Udmurtia, the city is located at the intersection of air routes, rail, and road transport. The main types of public transport are buses, trams, trolleybuses. The airport of Izhevsk offers mainly regular flights to Moscow and St. Petersburg. It takes about 17 hours to go from Moscow to Izhevsk by rail.
On the territory of Izhevsk there are more than 300 objects of historical and cultural heritage: 166 architectural monuments, 4 monuments of archeology, 81 objects of monumental art, and about 60 plaques.
The city has a lot of beautiful churches, unusual monuments, interesting museums, and pleasant green areas for walking. Tourists often buy souvenirs with weapons themes, patterned woolen socks and mittens, dolls in national Udmurt clothes, and paintings made by local artists.
