Kazan State Power Engineering University
The institution of higher learning received the status of university in the year 2000 on the basis of the Kazan branch of Moscow Power Engineering Institute. Kazan branch was established in 1968 and this year the university celebrates its 45th anniversary. For nine years the university was headed by a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, an honoured worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan, doctor of technical Sciences, Professor Yuri G. Nazmeev. From 2003 the rector of the university was doctor of physics-mathematics sciences, professor, laureate of the Order M. Lomanosov, an honoured worker of Science of the Republic of Tatarstan, Yuri Y. Petrushenko. At the end of 2011 Kazan State Power Engineering University was headed by philosophy doctor (PhD) of technical Sciences, Associate Professor Edward Y. Abdullazyanov.
Kazan State Power Engineering University is one of three state specialized power engineering institutions of higher learning in the Russian Federation (the other two being Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Technical University) and Ivanovo State Power Engineering University) and occupies one of the leading places in the region in education, availability of technical equipment and conditions of scientific research and study process. The university trains specialists in 14 directions of preparing bachelors and masters, and in 11 directions of training specialists (31 specialties) on full time, evening and correspondence forms of study.
The university trains specialists for the power grids of the Volga region, and for the nearby and far foreign countries. Students undergo practical training at the power companies of the Kazan city, Republic of Tatarstan and Volga Region. Today the university has about nine thousand students and post-graduates from various regions of the Russian Federation, CIS countries, Asia and Africa.
The university carries out retraining and qualification upgrading of the specialists in various fields of production, science and technology.
The educational process is conducted by highly qualified personnel. More than 21.2% (576 people) of the lecturers are doctors of sciences, professors; 70.2% have academic degrees and titles (doctors of science – 73 people, philosophy doctors (PhD) of science – 328 people). On the level of professor – lecturer composition qualification the Kazan State Power Engineering University occupies one of leading places among all technical universities of Russia.
On the basis of the Kazan State Power Engineering University operates the scientific research Institute of power engineering problems, which is called upon to resolve tasks in the areas of heat and electric power industry, electrical engineering and electronics, environment conservation and rational utilization of the resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, Volga Region and Western Urals. On the amount and the quality, scientific works performed by KSPEU are among the best from the institutions of higher learning in the Russian Federation.
The university is equipped with modern corporate information and computing network, uniting all the subdivisions of the KSPEU, successfully used in the educational process and scientific research, Internet classes.
The University has a publishing-polygraphic complex, equipped with modern equipment for producing books, methodical literature, scientific journals, etc.
The KSPEU library has many reading halls and has a vast stock of literature in the field of power engineering. The whole stock of the library is reflected in the electronic catalogues of the university’s common computer network with free access for users.

The Kazan State Power Engineering University has two dormitories, located near the study buildings.
Distance from the hostel to the university – 500 m;
Living conditions 1 and 2 houses; there are toilets, a shower room, library in the hostel № 1, a gym and a snack bar in the hostel № 2;
All the first year students from other towns and countries are offered accommodation in the hostels.
Kazan City
Kazan, a city in Russia and a large river port on the Volga River, is the capital of Tatarstan Republic, located about 820 km east of Moscow. It is one of the most important economic, scientific and cultural centers of the country.
Kazan features
From the Tatar people language the word “qazan” means a “boiler” or “cauldron”. The historical symbol of Kazan, depicted on its coat of arms and flag, is a mythical dragon-creature Zilant often mentioned in local legends.
Kazan climate is temperate continental, extreme cold and scorching heat are rare and not typical for the city. The average temperature in January is minus 10.4 degrees Celsius, in July – plus 20.2 degrees C.
National composition of the population of Kazan: 48.6% – Russians, 47.6% – Tatars, 0.8% – Chuvash, 0.4% – Ukrainians, 0.3% – Mari. Today, Kazan is the cultural center of the Tatar people.
The city has been undergoing a total renovation since 2000. Kazan metro was opened in 2005. The city celebrated its millennium in 2005, when one of the largest mosques in Russia (Qolsharif) was built inside Kazan Kremlin walls. Also, Millennium Bridge was opened in 2005.
Kazan Kremlin is included in the UNESCO list of monuments of world heritage. Present day Kazan is one of the most popular Russian cities among domestic and foreign tourists. About one million tourists visit Kazan a year.
