Kamchatka State Technical University

KamchatSTU is the oldest among Kamchatka higher education institutions. It is training specialists for fishing industry. Scientific researches on a wide range of issues concerning rational use of natural resources, creation of new technologies of processing and reproduction of raw materials, modernization of fish branch are conducted at the University.

There are 5 faculties (Maritime, Technological, Economics and Management, IT and Advanced Training) and also College, postgraduate training program, Regional Center of Sea Additional Professional Education, Training and Simulator Center, Local Testing Center and Community Centre. KamchatSTU provides training in 35 specializations.

Educational and scientific work in Kamchatka State Technical University is performed by 128 teachers, 72 of them have academic degrees and ranks, including 17 doctors of science and professors. The university has Dissertation Council for doctor’s and master’s theses defense D 307.008.01 in specialties 03.02.08 Ecology (biology) and 03.02.06 Ichthyology.

Since 2002 the scientific journal “Bulletin of Kamchatka State Technical University” has been issued. The journal is included in List of peer-reviewed publications (State Commission for Academic degrees and Titles of the Russian Federation at number 190).

The university has good material and technical base, 7 academic buildings, a culture and art center, a sports complex, a health center, a canteen and a dormitory. There are 21 Internet servers, 1 LAN, 510 terminals with Internet access for the information service. Scientific and technical library of the University is the second in Kamchatka region in the size of book stock. It services access to Internet and to the Russian State Library.

KamchatGTU is a partner of International Academy of Ecology Man and Nature Protection Sciences, WWF, ASFA, PILA, Wild Salmon Center (USA) College of Natural Sciences (South Korea), Hokkaido University (Japan), Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus.

Student Accommodation

The dormitory of the KamchatGTU is located on the street. Leningrad, 45, in a 5-storey building with a total area of 4012.7 m 2, the living area is 2283.3 m2. The work of the dormitory takes place in accordance with the Regulation on the dormitory of the FEDERAL State Dormitory of the KamchatkaGTU and the Internal Regulations in the student dormitory. Regulatory requirements for settlement provide for 6 m2 per resident. In 2013, there is an overhaul of bathrooms and showers). Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is a city and a sea port located in the Far East of Russia, the capital of Kamchatka krai. It is a base of the Russian Pacific Fleet.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is one of the oldest cities in the Far East of Russia. The city is located in the south-eastern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula, on Avachin Bay of the Pacific Ocean, about 8,200 km from Moscow. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the most eastern city of the entire northern hemisphere with a population of more than 100,000 people. The level difference in the city is about 514 meters.

 

The climate is temperate, with some features of sea climate and monsoon climate. It is mild, with snowy winters, cold springs, cool summers, and relatively warm autumns. The average temperature in February (the coldest month) is minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, in August (the warmest month) – plus 15.1 degrees Celsius. The eastern coast of Kamchatka, Japan, and the Kuril Islands are the most seismically active place on Earth.

 

Tourism is becoming an increasingly important part of the local economy. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky travel agencies offer trips to hot springs and volcanoes, helicopter tours to the famous Valley of Geysers and Uzon Volcano, horse rides as well as sea voyages, rafting, and fishing. But still only a few tens of thousands of tourists visit Kamchatka annually.

 

The main branch of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky economy is fishery. There are several large fish-processing plants in the city. Fish and sea food (squids, crabs, shrimps) are mainly exported abroad – to Japan, South Korea, China. Also there are several mineral deposits in the region (gold, silver, platinum, nickel).

 

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is connected with other Russian cities by air and sea. The international airport Yelizovo offers flights to Moscow, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Novosibirsk, Magadan. The sea port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky carries out transshipment of various cargoes.

 

Buses are used as the main form of public transport. The city is not connected to the rest of Russia by rail, there are no railways in Kamchatka.
