The long history of our university began in 1932. The university was opened on the basis of the Kazan Forestry Institute transferred to the town of Yoshkar-Ola and was named the Volga Forestry Institute. So in our city there was an independent higher educational institution. After – there were several renames. However, no matter how the university was called – PLTI-MarPI-MARGTU, he gave each graduate a quality education. Today the university is called the Volga State University of Technology (Volgatech). For more than 85 years of history it was completed by more than 80 thousand graduates, among them – many heads of enterprises, successful businessmen, scientists, prominent statesmen. Today about 10 thousand people study in the PSTU in demand for programs of higher and secondary vocational education, of which about 600 are foreigners. In 2016 a total of about 3000 budget places were allocated to the university complex, of which more than 600 were allocated for secondary vocational education programs, about 1.5 thousand – for specialties and bachelor’s programs, nearly 900 for magistracy, and 10 budget places for postgraduate study.The main structure of the university includes 3 institutes, 5 faculties, 2 educational centers on the rights of faculties, the Higher College Polytechnic, the Yoshkar-Ola Agrarian College and two branches in the cities of Volzhsk (the Republic of Mari El) and Mariinsky Posad (the Republic of Chuvashia). There is additional education. The university has its own institute of additional vocational education, the linguistic center ORBIS, preparatory courses, a driving school, a labor protection center. Of particular importance for the university are the botanical garden-institute and the training and experimental forestry. Two objects designed for educational, scientific and industrial purposes. This is the “green islets” of Volgatech, which are a symbol of the university with a powerful forest school.

Yoshkar-Ola City
Yoshkar-Ola is a city in Russia, the capital of the Republic of Mari El, located on the banks of the Malaya Kokshaga River, 50 km north of the Volga River and 750 km east of Moscow. It is a major diversified industrial, cultural and scientific center of the republic, one of the centers of culture of Finno-Ugric Peoples. City Day is celebrated in the beginning of August.
Yoshkar-Ola features
Yoshkar-Ola is located in the region of temperate continental climate. Long cold and snowy winters with the average temperature of about minus 12 degrees Celsius are usual. January and February are the coldest months. Summers are warm, the average temperature in July is about plus 18.7 degrees Celsius.
National composition of the local population according to the 2010 population census: Russians (61%), Mari (23%), Tatars (4%). There are two state universities in the city: Mari State University and Volga State University of Technology.
Yoshkar-Ola is connected with other cities of Russia by several bus and railway routes. Daily trains to Moscow are available at the railway station. Other cities, towns and villages of the republic and neighboring regions can be reached from the bus station located nearby. There is an airport located about 9 km north of the city.
Public transport is represented by minibuses (known as “marshrutki”), buses and trolleybuses. Yoshkar-Ola taxi system is also well developed.
