Dagestan State Pedagogical University

Dagestan State University was founded in October, 1931 as the Teachers’ Training Institute, and later, in 1957, it was transformed into Dagestan State University (DSU). During its formation and development, the university has played a prominent role in the socio-economic and cultural development of the peoples of Dagestan as well as in the development of its scientific, technical, educational and artistic communities. Thereby, the University performed a historical mission in the life of the peoples of Dagestan and Russia.

 

Today DSU ranks as a major educational, scientific and cultural center which provides training at all levels of pre-university, university, postgraduate and further education in 59 specialties and degree programs for natural sciences, liberal arts and technical studies.

 

The University has an innovative academic, research and organizational structure that includes 17 faculties, 7 filial branches, 103 departments, 2 museums (historical and biological), a fundamental library containing more than 2.5 million volumes, a biological station and a planetarium. It also owns its own seaside recreation base, a sports complex, a clinic and students’ resort center.

Student Accommodation

Students are offered comfortable rooms in students’ hostels. There are different types of rooms for students: male and female students live separately. Two or three persons can share the room. Bathrooms and kitchens for students are offered on the sharing basis. Students have to bring their own utensils with them.  All the students’ hostels are well heated and guarded with the police security and closely situated to the Academy. So, the students can easily get to their educational establishment by feet.

Makhachkala City

Makhachkala is a city in southern Russia, the capital of Dagestan Republic, located on the shore of the Caspian Sea. It is a cultural, economic, scientific, and tourist center of the region.

 

Makhachkala features

Makhachkala is located near the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, on a narrow strip of lowland plains of the western coast of the Caspian Sea between Mount Tarki-Tau and the sea, which in the distant past was called “Dagestani Passage.”

The climate is temperate continental. Summers are hot, winters are very mild. The average temperature in January is plus 1.2 degrees Celsius, in July – plus 24.7 degrees C.

Makhachkala is a major tourist and health center. Thanks to the warm climate and favorable geomagnetic environment, a large number of resorts and treatment centers can be found near the city.

“Uytash” international airport, located about 12 km from the city, is the main airport of Dagestan Republic. The airport offers flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Mineralnye Vody, Rostov-on-Don, Surgut.

Makhachkala industrial plants are specialized in wood processing, metal working, electronic, fish processing.

Today, Makhachkala is home to more than 60 nationalities. According to the 2010 census, the population consisted of:

Most of the population (about 90%) is Sunni Muslim. The Central Juma mosque is located on Imam Shamil Avenue. The city also has an Orthodox church – Holy Assumption Cathedral on Ordzhonikidze Street, which is the cathedral of the Diocese of Makhachkala.
